A minimum of thirteen passengers killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term finished the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public works. They were built at an rapid speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
